Former England international Andros Townsend escaped serious injury after an accident involving a pitch roller during halftime of a Thai Premier League match. Townsend, who recently joined PT Prachuap, was warming up with his teammates ahead of the second half when the incident occurred.
As the players were passing the ball during the break, a ground staff member operating a pitch roller entered the field. Townsend, attempting a flick pass outside the designated warm-up area, inadvertently stepped into the path of the approaching machine. The pitch roller struck him in the legs, knocking him to the ground with enough force to cause the vehicle to roll partially over his body, stopping just above his hips.
Teammates looked on in shock before quickly coming to his aid. Despite the severity of the incident, Townsend was able to avoid any serious injuries. Following medical checks, he was cleared to continue with the match, although he featured for only one minute in the game against Pattani.
Townsend’s presence on the field was limited during his early appearances for PT Prachuap, with this being just his third league match since moving to the Thai Premier League. The unusual accident drew attention to the potential hazards of maintenance equipment on active playing surfaces during matches.
