A retired New York Police Department detective was charged with murder following a fatal shooting on the George Washington Bridge Tuesday evening, authorities said.

Victor Romero, 62, who retired from the NYPD in 2001, was accused of fatally shooting 46-year-old Koran Irvine, a Con Edison employee and resident of Valley Cottage, Rockland County. The incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. on the New Jersey-bound upper level of the bridge.

According to law enforcement sources, Romero allegedly shot Irvine during a traffic dispute. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators reportedly captures the moment Irvine’s vehicle abruptly jerked as Romero’s car approached close to the rear passenger side. Authorities believe a single gunshot was fired, entering through the back window, grazing a headrest, and striking Irvine in the right shoulder before exiting his neck. Irvine was transported to Englewood Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Romero, who most recently lived in Haverstraw, New York, was taken into custody and was awaiting arraignment Wednesday night. Sources indicated that he admitted to the shooting and relinquished the firearm to police. His home was secured as investigators awaited a search warrant, and his car was impounded by law enforcement.

Romero formerly served in the Brooklyn North Narcotics division. His retirement followed a 2000 off-duty shooting incident at his family’s dry cleaning business in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. At that time, Romero confronted armed robbers at King’s Laundromat. During the robbery, one of the suspects threatened staff and customers, prompting Romero to draw his service weapon and exchange fire. Romero and two suspects were wounded, leading some officers to describe him as a hero who averted greater violence.

Irvine is survived by his wife and two children. Family members described him as a devoted father and husband who prioritized his family and maintained a trouble-free life. A cousin expressed shock and sorrow over the shooting, noting Irvine’s dedication to his loved ones and his passion for the New York Jets.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting or further details about the circumstances leading up to the confrontation. The investigation remains ongoing.
