A former OnlyFans creator has described ongoing social stigma and personal safety concerns she faced after leaving the platform, where she initially sought to supplement her income. Speaking anonymously as Emmerald, she recounted how what began as a financial necessity eventually resulted in lasting challenges in her personal life and relationships.

Emmerald said she joined OnlyFans to help support herself and her family, including her disabled parents and her daughter. Early in her experience, a man named Richard began sending her money, initially around £600, which she accepted to alleviate financial pressure. However, Richard’s behavior soon turned invasive and alarming. He professed feelings of love and insisted he wanted to protect her from harm by providing financial support, effectively trying to control her activities on the platform.

After rejecting Richard’s advances, Emmerald faced persistent unwanted contact, including repeated phone calls and a disturbing delivery of flowers to her family home. She realised that Richard had accessed her address through the transfer details of money he had sent to her father’s bank account. Following these incidents, she involved the police and successfully obtained a restraining order against him.

The experience prompted Emmerald to sever all ties with OnlyFans and cancel future arrangements with clients. Despite leaving the platform, she reported ongoing difficulties as the label of “escort” continued to shadow her. Attempts to engage in conventional dating through apps such as Hinge and Bumble were met with judgment and rejection. On one occasion, after revealing her OnlyFans history to a man named Jonny, she said he reacted with disgust and abruptly ended their date. She also described being subjected to derogatory name-calling by others, as well as accusations during arguments in relationships.

Emmerald emphasised the misperception that anyone with an OnlyFans background necessarily engaged in sex work, a stigma she said has damaged her prospects for love and challenged her self-worth. She stated that despite never exchanging sexual favours for money, she has struggled to convince others of this distinction.

Reflecting on her experience, Emmerald advised caution for those considering joining OnlyFans, urging them to establish clear personal boundaries and to prepare for potential social consequences. She characterised her time on the platform as a “biggest regret,” warning that the associated stigma can be long-lasting and difficult to overcome.
