Two former San Francisco police officers and their adult daughter were found dead Sunday in an apparent double murder-suicide at their home in Marin County, California, authorities said.
The incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. at a residence on Strawberry Circle in the waterfront community of Strawberry, part of the Mill Valley area. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting inside the home. Upon arrival, officers discovered the bodies of Kevin Mannix, 68; Ann Elizabeth Corriea Mannix, 65; and their 24-year-old daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Mannix. A fourth individual residing at the home called 911 but was not harmed. Officials have not disclosed that person’s identity or relationship to the family.
While the investigation remains in its early stages, sheriff’s officials indicated that Kevin Mannix is believed to have fatally shot his wife and daughter before taking his own life. Autopsies are scheduled to be conducted on Tuesday to confirm the cause of death.
San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew confirmed Monday that both Kevin and Ann Mannix were retired members of the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), and that the younger woman was their daughter. Lew expressed condolences to the family and the department, describing the loss as deeply tragic and noting the difficulty in finding answers to such a devastating event. He also said he has been in contact with Marin County Sheriff Jamie Scardina as the investigation continues.
Ann Mannix served in the SFPD for more than 30 years and was recognized for several notable achievements, including becoming the first woman to lead the department’s tactical company and the first female member of the SWAT team. She was a fourth-generation San Franciscan and was active in youth sports, serving as a volunteer basketball coach.
Kevin Mannix worked at the department’s Taraval Station for nearly three decades before retiring. According to a community newsletter he contributed to in 2018, he was looking forward to spending more time with family and friends during retirement. Additionally, he had experience as an investigator for the San Francisco district attorney’s office, according to local reports.
The San Francisco Police Officers Association released a statement mourning the loss and acknowledging the profound impact on colleagues and loved ones, emphasizing the challenging nature of comprehending the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
