Jeremy Paynter, a former champion powerlifter, died after a jet ski accident off the coast of Majorca on June 28, an inquest has revealed. The 45-year-old finance executive from Seabrook, Kent, was holidaying with his partner, Emily Hill, when the incident occurred.

According to the coroner, Patricia Harding, Paynter was on a stationary jet ski that unexpectedly tipped over. Although he successfully helped his partner back onto the craft, he was unable to get on himself. Despite wearing a life jacket, he was later pulled from the water but could not be revived.

A post-mortem examination conducted in Spain determined the cause of death as asphyxia. Harding noted during the inquest hearing that Paynter “pushed his partner back on but struggled himself.”

Paynter’s former wife, Catherine Spencer, a former England rugby player, described him as “an incredible dad” to their seven-year-old daughter. A full inquest into the circumstances of his death is scheduled to take place at a later date.
