Four individuals appeared in court this week charged with the murder of a newborn baby girl found dead in Sheffield. The infant, referred to in court documents as Baby S, was discovered early Sunday morning at a property in the Holywell Heights area of Wincobank, a residential neighborhood in the northeast of the city.
Prosecutors told Sheffield magistrates that the baby, who was reportedly born at 37 weeks, had suffered 33 wounds from 15 separate stab injuries to her face and torso, both front and back. A doctor testified that the injuries were inflicted while the baby was still alive. The child was found wrapped in a towel and placed inside a blue bag on top of a washing machine in an outhouse at the address.
The four adults charged with murder are Andrea Skopova, 20, identified as the mother; Peter Horvath Jr, 19, her partner but not believed to be the father; and his parents, Peter Horvath Sr, 38, and Nina Horvathova, 37. All four are Slovakian nationals and appeared in court with interpreters present. They also face charges of causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice, alleged to involve efforts to clean the crime scene. A 15-year-old girl, also Slovakian and unnamed due to legal protections, was charged separately with perverting the course of justice and was remanded in youth custody to appear alongside the adults at Sheffield Crown Court.
Police were initially alerted after Skopova presented at a hospital shortly after giving birth, prompting medical staff to raise concerns for the safety of the infant. Officers then searched the family home and found the baby’s body in the outhouse. A blood-covered knife was recovered and is undergoing forensic examination. An eight-year-old child was reportedly present at the house at the time of the incident.
Two additional women, aged 26 and 37, were arrested on suspicion of murder but remain on bail, police confirmed.
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward from South Yorkshire Police described the charges as a significant development in a complex investigation and urged the public to avoid speculation or sharing unverified information online. Law enforcement indicated that officers remain active in the Holywell Heights area conducting further inquiries.
Family members attending the initial hearing were visibly emotional, and local residents left floral tributes near the cordoned-off property, reflecting community shock at the case. The defendants were remanded in custody and are due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court for further proceedings.
