Chelsea’s ongoing pre-season tour in Australia and Asia marks an important juncture for several players as the club prepares for a campaign without European football. Under new manager Xabi Alonso, several squad members face increased pressure to secure their futures amid a planned squad overhaul and pursuit of new signings.

Among those under close scrutiny is striker Liam Delap. Once hailed as a promising £30 million signing following an impressive spell at Ipswich, Delap’s first season with Chelsea was marred by injuries and disciplinary setbacks, yielding only two goals in all competitions. Despite some promising moments, including a goal in a Champions League win over Barcelona, Delap struggled to establish himself and was occasionally deployed out of position on the wing. Defensively, Wesley Fofana faces uncertainty amid a crowded centre-back roster. Since his £70 million transfer from Leicester City in 2022, the 25-year-old has contended with injuries and a series of disciplinary issues, accumulating ten convictions in under a year. Chelsea’s recent acquisition of Maxence Lacroix, alongside Levi Colwill, has further intensified competition. With Alonso potentially adopting a three-man defense, Fofana will need to elevate his performance to stake a claim for a starting role.

Winger Jamie Gittens, who joined Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund for £48.5 million, has also encountered challenges. Limited to five Premier League starts before a hamstring injury curtailed his season in February, the 21-year-old is now fit and recently scored in a closed-door friendly. However, the arrival of England international Morgan Rogers and the ongoing recovery of Brazilian prospect Estevao Willian mean Gittens faces stiff competition and must capitalize on the current tour to impress the coaching staff.

Finally, versatile defender Jorell Hato finds himself in a potentially favorable position following the departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid. The 20-year-old Dutchman, capable of playing at centre-back or left-back, impressed under previous management and now has an opportunity to establish himself, especially as Chelsea continue negotiations to sign Rayo Vallecano’s Pep Chavarria for the left-back role.
