Blue Bolt secured her fourth consecutive victory with a narrow win in the Group 1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville on August 2, edging out Precise by half a length. The €300,000 race over 1,600 meters was the first Group 1 feature of the Deauville August Festival and marked another success for British trainer Andrew Balding, following his recent King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes victory with Kalash.

Ridden by Colin Keane, the four-year-old mare overcame a challenging moment in the final stages when she momentarily veered outward under pressure. Keane's quick adjustment and well-timed urging helped Blue Bolt regain her stride and secure the win. Owned by Juddmonte Farms, Blue Bolt had previously defeated the Aidan O’Brien-trained Precise in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket on July 10, marking a repeat of that order this time after a more closely contested finish. Precise, ridden by Ryan Moore, set a strong pace from the 400-meter mark but was unable to hold off Blue Bolt’s late surge. British filly Moon Target finished third, 1¾ lengths behind Precise.

Balding praised Keane’s handling of the race and highlighted the filly’s powerful physique and competitiveness as key to her success. “She really is a remarkable filly,” Balding said, adding that he was initially uncertain of the outcome during the final 200 meters but credited Keane with perfectly judging Blue Bolt’s effort. Balding also acknowledged the work of stable rider Alfie Redman, who has contributed significantly to conditioning the filly and managing her strong-willed nature.

The trainer emphasized Blue Bolt’s versatility across different track conditions as a significant advantage and confirmed that the Group 1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on September 12 remains her primary target for the season. Regarding plans beyond that race, Balding was noncommittal, stating, “we shall see.”

On the other side, O’Brien expressed satisfaction with Precise’s performance despite finishing second again. He noted that while Precise lost by two lengths to Blue Bolt in the previous outing at Newmarket, the margin in Deauville was much narrower despite less favorable weight conditions. O’Brien suggested that Precise might increase her racing distance in upcoming events but indicated that her future campaign has not yet been finalized, saying the team would take time to consider her best path forward.
