A series of Ukrainian drone attacks struck the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula on June 21, resulting in multiple casualties and significant disruptions to civilian infrastructure, according to statements from local authorities and Ukrainian officials.
Russian-installed Crimea governor Sergey Aksyonov reported that four people were killed and 28 wounded in the attacks, which targeted the Kerch peninsula, a key area bordering Russia. Fuel sales at Crimean petrol stations were suspended shortly after the raids, with supplies restricted exclusively to state enterprises responsible for essential services and security. The peninsula experienced power outages following damage to electricity networks, and ferry traffic across the Kerch Strait—connecting Crimea to Russia’s Krasnodar region—was temporarily halted. Additionally, bridge traffic linking Crimea to Krasnodar was stopped for over nine hours, causing delays for 11 trains.
Authorities in Krasnodar reported that a Ukrainian drone strike hit an oil transport facility, killing one person on a passenger ferry and causing a fire at an oil terminal. Russian officials said they had intercepted 239 Ukrainian drones during overnight defensive operations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the barrage as a deliberate response to what Ukraine calls sustained Russian aggression. He stated that the attacks targeted military logistics, oil infrastructure, air defense systems, and the strategic Crimean Bridge, which connects the peninsula to mainland Russia. Zelensky characterized these strikes as “long-range sanctions” aimed at degrading Russia’s operational capabilities and supply routes in both Crimea and occupied southeastern Ukraine.
The recent intensification of drone attacks on Crimea underscores Ukraine’s expanded capabilities following upgrades to its long-range drone technology, which Kyiv says now enables precision strikes across the land corridor controlled by Russian forces. These operations have contributed to a fuel crisis in the peninsula, occurring as the region approaches the summer holiday season.
Russian authorities emphasized the defensive nature of their response, highlighting the large number of intercepted drones and efforts to protect critical infrastructure. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials maintain that their actions target military and logistical assets, denying any intention to harm civilians.
The ongoing strikes and countermeasures reflect the persistent tensions and hostilities in the region nearly four years after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. Both sides continue to engage in cyclical attacks and reprisals amid broader conflict in eastern and southern Ukraine.
