The Foreign Policy Association (FPA) honored His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani for his leadership in mediation and international diplomacy during a ceremony held in New York. The award was accepted on behalf of the Amir by HE Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani.

The event was attended by key figures including FPA President and CEO Noel Lateef, Vice-Chairman Sana Sabbagh, and members of the association’s board of directors. Lateef highlighted HH the Amir’s pioneering role and significant contributions toward advancing global peace and security, emphasizing Qatar’s emphasis on mediation, dialogue, and diplomatic engagement as central tenets of its foreign policy. He further praised the Amir’s efforts to promote multilateral cooperation at both regional and international levels.

Vice-Chairman Sana Sabbagh echoed these sentiments, noting the association’s pride in recognizing HH the Amir’s leadership amid a complex and uncertain global political landscape. She emphasized that the award underscored the FPA’s belief that diplomacy requires patience, perseverance, and sincere dialogue to build stronger international ties and sustain peace.

In her remarks, Sheikha Alya conveyed the Amir’s gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the FPA’s longstanding commitment to fostering an informed public as a vital component of international responsibility. She noted that under HH the Amir’s leadership since 2013, Qatar has become a prominent mediator on the world stage, advocating for peaceful solutions and efforts to prevent the devastating consequences of war.

Sheikha Alya stressed that Qatar’s foreign policy under the Amir is rooted in principles of peaceful dispute resolution, respect for international law, and protection of civilians. These principles reflect a firm belief that no conflict is beyond dialogue. She also underscored Qatar’s efforts to strengthen its global standing through investments in technology, energy, education, sports, and partnerships with the international community.

The Permanent Representative elaborated on Qatar’s mediation strategy, which is based on two key principles: mediation must aim to achieve sustainable peace and establish conditions for its lasting maintenance, and peace requires reconstruction efforts to avoid being a mere cessation of hostilities. She highlighted Qatar’s role in supporting countries emerging from conflict by contributing to development and humanitarian initiatives designed to foster long-term stability.

Education and investment in youth were identified as cornerstones of HH the Amir’s vision, seen as critical to preventing the recurrence of conflict by providing future generations with opportunities for progress and security.

The FPA’s board of directors unanimously approved the award, recognizing HH the Amir’s extensive contributions to foreign policy and his dedication to fostering international understanding and cooperation.
