Frank Warren, the veteran boxing promoter, remains confident that rising British heavyweight Moses Itauma can compete with, and potentially defeat, former undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk, despite the Ukrainian champion choosing a different opponent for his farewell bout.
Usyk, 39, who relinquished his undisputed heavyweight titles over the past year, is reportedly pursuing a final match against ex-WBC titleholder Deontay Wilder. This planned fight aims to serve as Usyk’s career finale. In contrast, Usyk has indicated skepticism regarding a matchup with Itauma, suggesting that he would disrupt the young contender’s growing momentum.
Warren previously proposed a bout between Itauma and Usyk prior to the latter vacating his titles, asserting his willingness to pit Itauma against any adversary. Speaking to media outlets, Warren expressed strong belief in Itauma’s capabilities, describing him as a "unique fighter" with the talent to overcome most opponents in the heavyweight division, including Usyk himself.
Itauma, who turned professional in 2023 at the age of 18, has been guided by Francis Warren, Frank Warren’s son, since his transition from amateur to pro ranks. Francis Warren recounted first witnessing Itauma’s potential at age 14 during sparring sessions with a British champion, lauding the young fighter’s movement, footwork, and technical aptitude. He described the experience as “poetry in motion,” highlighting Itauma’s early demonstration of skill and composure in the ring.
Following these early impressions, Francis Warren secured a scholarship contract for Itauma under Queensberry Promotions, the family’s promotion company. Comparisons have been drawn between Itauma and legendary figures such as Mike Tyson, underscoring the high expectations placed on the young heavyweight.
As Usyk prepares to face Wilder, the prospect of a future encounter with Itauma remains uncertain. Nevertheless, the Warrens maintain faith in the 21-year-old’s potential to challenge the elite of the division in the coming years.
