CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Freshman quarterback Michael Clayton II led Illinois to a 21-10 upset over Oregon on Saturday at Gies Memorial Stadium, marking a significant win for the Illini as they snapped a three-game losing streak against the Ducks.

Clayton, making his first career start in place of injured starter Katin Houser, completed 11 of 18 passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns. His late 23-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Collin Dixon, which was confirmed after a video review, sealed the victory for Illinois. Dixon managed to maintain control of the ball despite close coverage from an Oregon defender, preserving the score that put Illinois ahead 21-10.

Illinois (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) and Oregon (4-3, 2-2) both entered the contest relying on backup quarterbacks. Oregon’s Dylan Raiola, an experienced two-year starter at Nebraska filling in for injured star Dante Moore, completed 27 of 41 passes for 246 yards but struggled with turnovers, including two interceptions in the second half. Illinois coach Bret Bielema also utilized sophomore Carson Boyd during the game, with Boyd contributing key rushes on Illinois’ opening drive of the third quarter, which culminated in a touchdown pass from Clayton. Bielema praised both quarterbacks for their execution in a coordinated play that was deemed pivotal in shifting momentum.

The Illinois defense played a critical role, holding Oregon scoreless in the second half and forcing three missed field goals from Oregon kicker Gage Hurych, including two attempts beyond 45 yards in the fourth quarter. This defensive resilience came under the guidance of Roger Cooper, who recently took over defensive play-calling duties after the departure of Bobby Hauck.

Illinois running back Aidan Laughery provided a major boost with a 75-yard touchdown run late in the first half, narrowing Oregon’s lead to 10-7 before halftime. Laughery finished with 123 rushing yards, capitalizing on effective blocking and open field space.

Oregon, ranked No. 2 in preseason polls, has struggled recently amid key injuries and inconsistent quarterback play. Moore remains sidelined after a head injury, and several wide receivers, including Jeremiah McClellan and Evan Stewart, were unavailable due to injuries or other issues. The Ducks’ depth concerns were evident, and despite Raiola’s experience, they were unable to recover from early turnovers and missed scoring opportunities.

Illinois surged ahead in the second half and controlled the game’s tempo, improving their standing in Big Ten play. The victory marks a significant step for the Illini, especially with their reliance on backup quarterbacks and a defense adjusting to new leadership. Bielema acknowledged the personal significance of the win, referencing a lopsided loss to Oregon two years prior and expressing confidence in the team’s growth.

Clayton, a three-star recruit from Florida with a strong high school record exceeding 6,000 passing yards, previously showed promise stepping in during a tight overtime win against Michigan State. His composure and performance against Oregon confirmed his potential as the Illini navigate the rest of the season without Houser, who is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks following hand surgery.

The win provides Illinois with momentum as they seek to solidify their standing in the conference despite roster challenges. Meanwhile, Oregon faces continued uncertainty as it attempts to return to playoff contention.
