Friendly Soul is set to make a notable return in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes after a disappointing reappearance at Haydock. Trained by John and Thady Gosden, the mare showed considerable promise as a three-year-old, capturing a Group 3 race over the same course and distance before securing a Group 1 victory in the Prix de l’Opéra at Longchamp. Although her last outing ended abruptly when she fell through a hole on the track, the Gosdens remain confident in her abilities, indicating she is ready to prove her class once more.
Among her chief rivals is Blue Bolt, who emerged as a formidable contender after overtaking Kon Tiki at Goodwood. The filly, who also finished second in last season’s Sun Chariot Stakes, performs well over this distance and is expected to handle quicker ground conditions. Kon Tiki, having been bested by Blue Bolt recently, is anticipated to improve from that run and still holds potential for this event.
Cathedral offers additional quality in the field, with a record that includes a fourth-place finish in last year’s Coronation Stakes at this track and distance. However, drawing stall 15 may present a tactical challenge in the race. Jancis, who bested Cathedral in the Dahlia Stakes, could benefit if the race sets a strong early pace that diminishes in the closing stages.
Other notable entries include Godspeed, who boasts Group 2 form from France and was considered unlucky during a return at Longchamp. Catalina Delcarpio has impressed with her performances this season, including a strong showing at Leopardstown and a credible third-place finish in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot. Snellen has found success at this meeting before, securing a win and a second place from just two attempts, and is expected to perform well again, possibly exceeding expectations.
The lineup for the Duke of Cambridge Stakes reflects a blend of proven Group-level performers and rising contenders, setting the stage for a competitive showdown on the race’s return to Goodwood.
