As Gogglebox returns for its 28th series on Channel 4 tomorrow at 9 p.m., long-standing cast members Jenny Newby and Lee Riley say they have no plans to leave the popular show, citing their enduring friendship and enjoyment of the experience. The pair, friends for more than three decades, spoke about the unique bond they have developed through their years on the programme.
Lee Riley, 58, who spends most of the year in Cyprus with his partner Steve Mail, returns annually to film from his caravan in Patrington Haven, Hull. He credits the show for keeping him connected to the UK and values the camaraderie he shares with Jenny. “I’ve known Jenny since I was 27. She was our pub landlady and took us under her wing. She’s one in a million,” he said. The two are often recognized by viewers who relate to their natural on-screen rapport, leading some to question if their friendship is genuine, a notion Lee quickly dismisses.
Jenny Newby, 70, whose husband Ray prefers to remain off-camera, described their time filming together as uplifting. “Sometimes if I’m feeling down, I come away from filming feeling much better. It’s a brilliant friendship, and I love every minute of it,” she said. Jenny also discussed her warm connection with the LGBTQ community, noting she feels fully accepted when visiting gay bars, where age is irrelevant. This connection has led fans to regard her as a potential gay icon, a suggestion she embraces with enthusiasm.
Both hail from Hull and enjoy engaging with fans who often recognize them on the street. Jenny finds delight in these encounters, even when fans offer playful remarks about her appearance. Despite their growing fame, the duo remains grounded, with Lee saying they have no interest in branching out into other reality shows. “We just want to do Gogglebox. Why change something that isn’t broken?” he explained.
After more than a decade on the programme, the pair have developed a strong rapport that sometimes includes light-hearted pranks, with Lee joking that when Jenny is tired, he can “get away with murder.” Jenny confirmed there are no hard feelings when pranks go awry, sharing a humorous story about a suncream stunt that left her out of commission for two days.
