New South Wales authorities have released footage highlighting a series of near-collision incidents on Sydney’s light rail network in an effort to raise public awareness about safety. The videos, captured by tram drivers, depict motorists, pedestrians, and food delivery cyclists narrowly avoiding crashes by mere centimetres.

According to NSW Transport Minister John Graham, these close calls underscore the significant dangers posed by light rail vehicles, which weigh as much as 60 cars and require extended distances to halt. “These moments are hard to watch when the difference between a near-miss and something much worse can be measured in centimetres and milliseconds,” Graham said. He urged all road users to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, stay vigilant, and avoid distractions.

Data from the state government shows that between January and the end of April this year, Sydney’s light rail system experienced eight collisions alongside 127 near-miss events. The incidents involve a range of road users and highlight the potential severity of interactions between trams and other traffic participants.

The state’s concern is further amplified by the fact that two pedestrians have lost their lives in separate light rail-related accidents over the past three years. Authorities warn that the inability of trams to swerve and their extended stopping distances make it critical for others sharing the road to exercise caution.

The campaign aims to reduce the risk of future accidents by encouraging safer behavior around the light rail network, emphasizing the importance of paying close attention near tram corridors to prevent tragedies.
