Sahil Shah, a 31-year-old former junior doctor, has transitioned from working in accident and emergency (A&E) departments to applying his medical expertise in the consultancy sector, aiming to address systemic healthcare challenges on a broader scale. After qualifying as a doctor in 2019, Shah recognised that while frontline clinical work was vital, it would not resolve deeper, long-term issues within healthcare systems.
In 2023, Shah joined the professional services firm EY, where he has leveraged his clinical background to support a range of healthcare-related projects. He approaches each consultancy assignment much like treating an A&E patient, conducting thorough assessments before recommending interventions. This method enables him to bring a practical perspective grounded in frontline experience to organisational reviews and process improvements.
One of Shah’s significant projects involves collaborating with Bupa, where he works alongside EY’s health team and Bupa’s internal audit function. In this role, he helps evaluate patient care delivery and staff operating models, aiming to ensure that the organisation can maintain high-quality healthcare services across the country. Shah’s clinical insight allows him to consider the experiences of doctors, nurses, and patients alike, which he then translates into strategic recommendations for senior leadership.
Beyond work in the UK, Shah has also contributed to global health efforts by assisting Unicef in reviewing medicine supply chains. His involvement seeks to enhance the efficiency and reliability of how vital medical supplies are distributed in international aid contexts.
Looking ahead, Shah is preparing to support NHS trusts with initiatives focused on improving the use of data and processes to better the working conditions for clinicians and the care experience for patients. He expressed enthusiasm about the potential for these improvements to make tangible differences in healthcare delivery.
Shah’s career shift exemplifies how clinical expertise can be integrated into wider system-level roles, addressing healthcare challenges through innovation, data-driven strategies, and operational insight.
