A 78-year-old woman of Indian descent was reportedly robbed of gold jewelry worth approximately 150,000 rupees (about RM7,400) during an evening walk in Brampton, Canada. The incident involved a stranger who initially approached the elderly woman in what appeared to be a respectful gesture but ended in theft.
According to accounts, the suspect touched the victim’s feet and embraced her in a manner resembling a familiar acquaintance. The woman, who has poor vision, initially mistook the younger individual for a neighbor. Moments later, the suspect allegedly removed a gold necklace and bangles from the victim before fleeing the scene in a sports utility vehicle.
The victim’s son expressed deep distress over the incident, emphasizing the sentimental value of the jewelry. The pieces were reportedly handcrafted by his father, a goldsmith, and had been given to his mother as wedding gifts in 1971. Following the theft, the woman was reportedly shaken and physically affected, with her son noting that she was unable to walk after realizing the loss.
Authorities in Brampton have confirmed that at least one other similar case has been reported, involving a comparable method of approach and theft. Police investigations are ongoing as they seek to identify and apprehend the suspect. No further details about the suspect or additional victims have been released.
