Frozen food retailer Iceland is reportedly considering the acquisition of several Poundland stores as the discount retailer’s owner, Gordon Brothers, seeks to complete a sale before the end of the year. Poundland, which operates approximately 600 stores across the United Kingdom, has attracted interest from multiple potential buyers amid efforts to stabilize its financial position.
Gordon Brothers, which took over Poundland following its entry into administration, is aiming for a swift transaction before the Christmas period. If the sale of the entire business to a single buyer does not materialize, the owner is prepared to sell the stores in smaller batches to different parties.
Iceland has confirmed that it regularly evaluates opportunities to expand its store footprint and is among the bidders considering some of the available Poundland locations. In addition to Iceland, other retail operators such as Poundstretcher, B&M, Lidl, and The Range have expressed interest in acquiring stores from the struggling discount retailer.
The potential fragmentation of Poundland’s estate reflects the urgency of the sale process and the competitive nature of the market for high-street discount outlets, especially ahead of the critical holiday trading season. Stakeholders are viewing the prospective acquisitions as opportunities to capitalize on established retail sites and broaden their reach within the UK’s value retail sector.
