FTI Consulting’s corporate finance team is currently hosting its annual client ski trip in Queenstown, New Zealand, providing a welcome contrast to a challenging ski season in Australia. The three-night event, taking place on the South Island, benefits from favorable snow conditions following substantial snowfall in July and August.

John Park and Vaughan Strawbridge, key figures within FTI’s corporate finance division, are leading the trip, which brings together approximately 20 FTI personnel along with selected clients. Strawbridge, known for his role as lead administrator at Virgin Australia, avoided providing detailed comments about the conditions when approached earlier this week.

The event is regarded internally as a significant annual occasion, especially notable within FTI’s broader consulting community, some of whom are experiencing less auspicious winter conditions at home. However, the corporate finance team’s delegation emphasizes the importance of client relationships in generating the fees that support such gatherings.

While the company declined to disclose the identities of invited clients officially, reports indicate that attendees include representatives from prominent investment banks such as Houlihan Lokey and Deutsche Bank, alongside partners from leading law firms including Freehills, Hamilton Locke, A&O Sherman, Clifford Chance, Gilbert + Tobin, and Allens, KPMG’s preferred legal partner. Contrary to circulating claims that only clients who have spent over $1 million with FTI since the previous trip are invited, the guest list reportedly also includes prospective clients, suggesting potential for future business development plays a role in selections.

Participants are currently enjoying skiing at Coronet Peak, which boasts close to one meter of snow cover, although forecasts indicate a possibility of light rain later in the week. The event traditionally incorporates social and networking activities, with refreshments such as local South Island Pinot Noir available, funded by FTI.

As the trip progresses, the blend of business and leisure continues to underscore the firm’s strategy of fostering client engagement through exclusive experiences in premium locations.
