Fuel prices in the United Kingdom have reached their highest levels in nearly a year, with the average cost of petrol and diesel continuing to rise amid sustained high crude oil prices. As of yesterday, the average price of a litre of petrol stood at 170.54 pence, the highest since August 2022, while diesel averaged 192.86 pence per litre, marking its highest level since July 2022.

The increase has resulted in a significant rise in the cost of filling a typical family car. According to Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, the expense of refueling has increased by nearly £5 over the past two weeks. Currently, it costs approximately £94 to fill a petrol car and £106 for a diesel vehicle.

Williams pointed to the ongoing trend of oil prices exceeding $100 per barrel as a key factor contributing to higher pump prices. He indicated that these sustained elevated costs have intensified pressure on the UK government, particularly the Chancellor, to implement measures supporting households facing financial strain.

The Treasury has been approached for comment regarding potential government response to the rising fuel costs.
