Hundreds of petrol stations across the United Kingdom are reportedly failing to comply with a legal requirement to report live fuel price changes to a government-mandated database, Fuel Finder. The system is designed to help drivers locate cheaper fuel options by providing up-to-date price information.

An analysis of submitted data indicates that around 570 petrol stations have not provided any price details to Fuel Finder since the requirement came into effect on February 2. Additionally, among those stations that have submitted prices, 1,751 have not updated their price information for more than a week, with 96 stations failing to report any changes for over a month.

All forecourts in the UK are mandated to update fuel prices within 30 minutes of any change, a rule intended to provide transparency and enable consumers to make informed decisions. However, according to Simon Williams, an official from the RAC, the extent of non-compliance identified is concerning. He noted that it is unlikely such a large number of sites have not adjusted prices in weeks, pointing out that most retailers receive new fuel deliveries at least weekly, prompting price reviews.

Industry representatives have offered explanations for some of the gaps in reporting. The Petrol Retailers Association suggested that smaller stations which receive deliveries infrequently, sometimes as rarely as once a month, might be among those not updating prices regularly.

The Competition and Markets Authority holds the authority to enforce compliance with the reporting requirements, potentially taking action against retailers who fail to meet the obligations of the Fuel Finder scheme.

Political figures have underscored the importance of the system. Sir Keir Starmer highlighted that the fuel price database helps consumers choose the lowest cost available, emphasizing the need for full adherence from petrol stations.

Efforts to ensure all retailers promptly and accurately report their prices are ongoing, with calls from motoring organizations and officials for immediate improvements to increase transparency in fuel pricing.
