A man sought for seven months in connection with the fatal shooting of two police officers has been killed during a confrontation with law enforcement. Dezi Freeman was fatally shot by special operations group officers on Monday morning at a property in Thologolong, located in the state's north-east, according to Victoria police chief commissioner Mike Bush.
The incident marked the conclusion of an extensive manhunt initiated on August 26, when Freeman was alleged to have shot and killed Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, 59, and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart-Hottart, 35. A third officer was also reportedly injured during that incident.
Commissioner Bush stated that on Monday, Freeman emerged from the building he was occupying with an item resembling a blanket draped over his shoulders. Police reports indicate that Freeman subsequently "presented" a firearm to officers, prompting the special operations group to open fire.
Authorities had been actively searching for Freeman since the August incident, which sparked a widespread police operation across the state. The seven-month pursuit involved significant resources dedicated to locating the individual suspected in the high-profile case involving the deaths of two serving police members. The police force has not yet released further details regarding the ongoing investigation into both the initial shootings and Monday's fatal encounter.
