The funeral for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is scheduled to commence in Tehran on July 4, with burial set to take place on July 9 in his hometown of Mashhad, according to state media reports released Saturday. The ceremonies will also include an event on July 7 in Qom, a key religious city located south of Tehran.
Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic for 36 years, was killed on February 28 during the first day of coordinated air strikes by Israeli and U.S. forces targeting Iran. The 86-year-old cleric’s central Tehran compound was reportedly destroyed in the assault.
Throughout his tenure, Khamenei was a vocal critic of the United States, which repeatedly sought to negotiate a resolution to tensions over Iran’s nuclear program without success. His death marks a significant moment in the country’s political landscape.
Following the attack, Khamenei was succeeded as Supreme Leader by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who is 56 years old. Mojtaba was injured in the same air strikes that claimed his father’s life and also suffered the loss of his wife in the operation.
