PUTRAJAYA — Search-and-rescue dogs and a cat drew considerable attention during the recent National Day parade, providing a unique and heartwarming highlight for spectators. Among the featured animals was Tar, a 10-year-old Labrador Retriever from the Civil Defence Force (APM) search-and-rescue (SAR) team.

Tar’s handler, Wellington Ho, who volunteers with the force, explained that the aim was to demonstrate the important roles these animals play in critical operations. Tar has notable experience, having participated in rescue efforts during the 2022 Batang Kali landslide, where he was instrumental in locating missing individuals amid debris. Despite his senior age, Tar remains capable of working effectively in challenging outdoor environments, according to Ho.

Throughout the parade, Tar maintained a calm and steady presence atop the APM vehicle, drawing crowds eager to take photographs with the dog. Tar also represents SAR Dogs Malaysia, an organisation recognised for its extensive involvement in rescue missions. The group was honoured at the 2024 Star Golden Hearts Awards, which recognise unsung heroes for their contributions.

Joining Tar was Becky, a dog from the Prison Department’s K9 unit, who wore a black vest with her name as she rode in one of the trucks. Becky remained composed despite the large crowd, symbolising the department’s canine capabilities.

Adding a lighter note to the event was King Oyen, a cat who captured the crowd’s imagination by riding a toy motorcycle while sporting a bow tie. Families gathered along the parade route to take photographs of the feline as Malaysian flags waved overhead, further enlivening the celebration atmosphere.

The participation of these animal companions offered a distinctive touch to the National Day festivities, providing memorable moments and showcasing the important partnership between humans and their furry counterparts in various public service roles.
