Transport for London has issued licences approving a fleet of autonomous electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles to operate as robotaxis in the city, marking a significant step toward bringing self-driving taxis to the capital. The cars, which will be operated by Uber using technology developed by British start-up Wayve, have been cleared to run under current regulations with a human “safety driver” behind the wheel. Additional authorizations are required before the vehicles can function fully autonomously.
This development, announced last week, represents one of the first instances of licensed robotaxis on London streets. If trials prove successful, it could lead to an expanded deployment of driverless taxis throughout the city, potentially reshaping urban transport options.
The approval has reignited debates surrounding the safety and readiness of autonomous vehicle technology. Critics caution that reliance on artificial intelligence for driving poses unresolved risks, while proponents argue that such innovations are necessary for technological advancement and enhanced mobility solutions.
Historically, similar concerns have accompanied the introduction of now-common technologies. For example, escalators, which are ubiquitous in public transport hubs and shopping centers today, were initially met with widespread apprehension. When the first escalator was installed in London’s Underground at Earl’s Court in 1911, many passengers hesitated to use it, fearing it was unsafe. William “Bumper” Harris, a one-legged engineer for the London Underground, reportedly demonstrated its safety by repeatedly riding it throughout its opening day to reassure the public.
Elevators, too, faced early skepticism before becoming central to modern architecture and urban life. The escalator and elevator industries have since grown into a global market valued at more than $90 billion (£67 billion).
The rollout of London’s autonomous taxis illustrates how emerging technologies often encounter initial resistance before attaining widespread acceptance.
