Gainsborough Trinity began their season with a 2-0 victory over Workington in their home opener on Saturday. The match was decided by second-half goals from Ashton Offler and Fraser Preston, securing three points for the hosts.

Preston was a consistent threat throughout the first half, twice narrowly missing the target following strong attacking play down the left flank. He also forced a save from Reds goalkeeper Alex Mitchell with a well-placed free kick. Despite these attempts, Gainsborough went into halftime without a goal.

The breakthrough came early in the second half when Preston capitalized on a well-executed team move. Theo Williams, deployed primarily on the right, set up captain Lewis Butroid, who opted to pass rather than shoot. Preston then finished with a composed strike to put Gainsborough in front.

Shortly after, Offler entered the match as a substitute and quickly made an impact. He connected with a precise cross from Williams, who had shifted to his preferred position on the wing, to head home a towering goal at the back post. This extended the lead and effectively secured the win for Gainsborough.

Workington’s goalkeeper Mitchell remained active during the closing stages, notably denying attempts from Harrison Beeden and Jack Leckie. However, his efforts were not enough to prevent Gainsborough from maintaining their advantage.

Gainsborough Trinity’s manager, Russ Wilcox, made a tactical switch by introducing Offler and repositioning Williams, a move that paid dividends in attack. The team’s confidence and composure were evident throughout the contest as they started their campaign with a solid home performance.
