BioWare, the Canadian video game developer known for creating acclaimed franchises such as Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, announced on Wednesday that it will be shutting down after more than 30 years in operation. The closure comes amid anticipated layoffs at BioWare’s parent company, Electronic Arts (EA), as part of broader cost-cutting measures.

The studio confirmed the cancellation of the forthcoming Mass Effect installment, which was in the early stages of development. The Mass Effect series, particularly the original trilogy released between 2007 and 2012, earned widespread praise for its immersive storytelling and rich world-building, contributing significantly to the role-playing genre.

In a statement posted on social media, BioWare reflected on its legacy, emphasizing the importance of player engagement in shaping the studio’s games. “What generations of BioWare built together is something to celebrate and remember,” the company said, noting that its titles achieved greater meaning through players’ emotional investment in character choices and narratives.

EA executives highlighted BioWare’s influential role in defining role-playing games. “BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly,” Cam Weber, president and chief studios officer at EA, and David Tinson, president and chief operating officer, stated in an internal memo.

The announcement follows recent strategic moves by Electronic Arts, including a significant ownership change in August. The company was acquired in a deal valued at approximately $55 billion by a consortium of private investors, which includes a firm managed by Jared Kushner, former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, as well as Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. This transaction has coincided with broader restructuring efforts, including limited workforce reductions.

BioWare, renowned for its narrative-driven role-playing experiences that allow players to develop in-game romances and character-driven story arcs, helped shape the genre’s evolution over three decades. Its influence is reflected in the success of newer titles in the role-playing space, such as Baldur’s Gate 3, developed by Larian Studios and released in 2023, which has sold over 10 million copies and set a new benchmark for character romance and storytelling.

As BioWare closes its chapter, the studio’s considerable impact on the gaming industry and its devoted fanbase remain significant, marking the end of an era for one of the most storied developers in video game history.
