Darius Garland made a strong statement in his debut for the Los Angeles Clippers, leading the team to a 121-96 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night at Intuit Dome. Garland, acquired from Cleveland in February in a trade involving James Harden, scored 30 points on 11-for-19 shooting, adding four assists in his first full season with Los Angeles.

The eighth-year guard started the game with an impressive shooting display, going five-for-five from the field and three-for-three from beyond the arc in just nine minutes, immediately energizing the Clippers and their home crowd. Speaking before tipoff, Garland addressed fans with enthusiasm, emphasizing the team’s commitment to competing at a high level after working hard during the offseason.

Sacramento’s Zach LaVine and Domantas Sabonis were the standout performers for the Kings. LaVine contributed 28 points, while Sabonis recorded a near triple-double with 14 points, 18 rebounds, and eight assists. Despite their efforts, the Kings were unable to keep pace with Los Angeles’ balanced attack.

The Clippers showcased depth and efficiency in the absence of former star Kawhi Leonard, who was traded back to Toronto last offseason. Veterans Derrick Jones Jr., Kris Dunn, Isaiah Jackson, and Brook Lopez all delivered solid performances. Jones added eight points, six rebounds, and five assists, highlighted by a highlight-reel alley-oop dunk. Dunn contributed seven points along with seven assists and five rebounds, known for his defensive intensity. Jackson put up 13 points and five rebounds, while Lopez had a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards.

Attention also centered on the Clippers’ new and young players. Rui Hachimura, a former Lakers forward who signed a three-year contract in the offseason, struggled in his debut, finishing with 10 points on 3-of-13 shooting. In contrast, Gradey Dick, acquired in the trade that sent Leonard to Toronto, showed promise by scoring 12 points.

Rookie Keaton Wagler, the team’s No. 5 overall pick in this year’s draft and the highest pick for the Clippers since Blake Griffin in 2009, impressed by posting 15 points with five assists and five rebounds off the bench. Wagler appeared composed and confident, contributing an assist on his first touch and scoring a well-executed layup early in his career. Fellow rookie Baba Miller, selected 36th overall, added four points and three rebounds in limited minutes.

The Clippers’ emphatic opening-night win raised expectations for a competitive season, with Garland’s leadership and the blend of veterans and young talent offering a promising outlook for the franchise’s post-Leonard era.
