Gary Moore, a veteran racehorse trainer with a career spanning 34 years, has announced his retirement from training. Moore, 70, who has overseen more than 2,000 winners over both jumps and flat racing, will hand over the training licence to his sons, Jamie and Josh, starting next week.
Based at his yard in West Sussex, Moore built a notable reputation with several high-profile horses, including Sire De Grugy, winner of the 2014 Champion Chase, as well as Goshen, Ar Mad, and Editeur Du Gite. His career came to a successful close at Brighton Racecourse, where he secured an unexpected double victory with Thundering Breeze and Gone Rogue, both winning at odds of 41-1.
Reflecting on the transition, Moore emphasized his confidence in his sons’ capability and work ethic, describing horse training as “a young man’s game.” He noted that while the dynamic in the yard will change, his role will shift from being in charge to supporting Jamie and Josh. “I’ve enjoyed every bit of it,” he said, expressing his satisfaction with his long career and the handover to the next generation.
