Representatives from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) convened virtually on June 30 to discuss advancing integration efforts in electricity and water sectors among member states. The Sultanate of Oman participated in the extraordinary meeting through Dr. Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.
The session focused primarily on reviewing the progress of a comprehensive study spearheaded by the GCC Secretariat-General. This study aims to promote enhanced cooperation and integration across key strategic sectors within the Gulf region, with particular emphasis on bolstering water security among council members. Officials emphasized the importance of these initiatives in supporting the broader objectives of Gulf joint action.
In addition to reviewing ongoing efforts, the committee considered a proposal to commission a new study investigating the feasibility of establishing interconnected water infrastructure projects linking GCC countries. Such interconnection projects are envisioned as a strategic measure to strengthen water resilience and ensure sustainable resource management in the face of growing demand and environmental challenges.
The meeting also outlined plans to organize a workshop that would bring together senior officials and technical specialists from member states. This gathering is intended to facilitate knowledge exchange, coordinate implementation strategies, and advance common policies related to water and electricity cooperation.
Overall, the discussions underscored the GCC’s continued commitment to regional integration in essential sectors, highlighting the role of collaborative frameworks in addressing shared challenges such as water scarcity and energy sustainability.
