The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the World Customs Organisation (WCO) have signed an addendum to their existing memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing collaboration between the two entities. The signing ceremony took place in Brussels and involved GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albualawi and WCO Secretary-General Ian Saunders.
This new agreement builds upon the original MoU, which was signed on December 15, 2017. It follows the recent activation of the GCC Customs Union Authority’s responsibilities, marking a significant step in deepening customs cooperation in the region.
According to the addendum, the GCC Customs Union Authority will take on an expanded role as the primary body responsible for coordination, communication, representation, and other related functions regarding the implementation of the MoU. This designation aims to streamline and clarify the organizational framework governing interactions between the GCC and the WCO.
Both Albualawi and Saunders expressed optimism that the addendum would strengthen institutional ties and facilitate closer cooperation on customs matters, enhancing efficiency and compliance across member states.
The agreement underscores a mutual commitment to fostering a more integrated customs system within the GCC, aligning regional efforts with international standards and practices promoted by the WCO. It is expected to support improved coordination on cross-border trade, enforcement of customs regulations, and the sharing of best practices among member countries.
