Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority (GEA) is commemorating its 10th anniversary this month, marking a decade of significant contributions to the country’s cultural and entertainment landscape. Established in May 2016, the authority has been instrumental in regulating entertainment activities, issuing licenses, supporting investors, and fostering collaboration among sector stakeholders to create a sustainable entertainment ecosystem.
Since its inception, the GEA has placed a strong emphasis on cultivating national talent, implementing specialized programs aimed at preparing Saudi professionals for leadership positions within the industry. This focus on human capital development aligns with the authority’s broader mission to elevate the Kingdom’s entertainment sector on the international stage.
One of the GEA’s most prominent accomplishments is the launch of six editions of Riyadh Season, beginning in 2019. Riyadh Season has rapidly evolved into one of the world’s premier entertainment festivals, distinguished by its diverse offerings and global appeal. The event’s brand value is estimated at $3.2 billion, underscoring its rapid growth and significance in the regional and global entertainment markets.
In addition to Riyadh Season, the GEA organizes the annual Joy Awards, which have become a cornerstone event within the sector. The awards attract leading Arab and international performers, drawing extensive media coverage and public attention, further highlighting Saudi Arabia’s growing prominence as an entertainment hub.
Expanding its portfolio of attractions, the Kingdom recently launched “Beast Land,” an entertainment city developed in collaboration with internationally acclaimed content creator MrBeast. This project reflects Saudi Arabia’s ambition to introduce innovative and cutting-edge entertainment experiences that resonate with both local and global audiences.
In remarks posted on the social media platform X, Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the GEA, expressed gratitude to King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their continuous support in advancing the entertainment sector. Alalshikh highlighted that over the past ten years, the Kingdom has hosted more than 39 seasons and 21 entertainment programs, collectively attracting over 320 million visitors and reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s standing in the global entertainment arena.
Looking ahead, the General Entertainment Authority continues to pursue a forward-thinking agenda, seeking to expand existing initiatives and develop new projects that will shape the future of entertainment in Saudi Arabia, aligning with the nation’s broader vision for economic diversification and cultural development.
