Geekdom, a creative community hub in Qatar, has experienced significant growth, with its annual event Geekend 2026 recording its highest attendance to date. The event took place from October 1 to 3 at the Geekdom Building on Lusail Boulevard, drawing together artists, illustrators, families, independent creators, and small businesses to celebrate creativity and shared passions.

Abdulla al-Musallam, Geekdom’s founder and chief administrative officer of the Doha Film Institute, emphasized that the increased turnout reflects a rising demand for spaces where individuals can freely express themselves and connect with like-minded people. He noted that the event attracted families across multiple generations, fostering new friendships and connections through shared interests, including social media interactions on platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok.

Geekend 2026 placed a strong focus on artists and illustration, featuring three days of live drawing competitions. Participants responded to announced themes by creating artwork in real time, with their pieces showcased on the Visit Qatar wall. Additionally, an illustration contest organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan culminated in an award ceremony, highlighting local artistic talent alongside Japanese cultural influences. Al-Musallam described the level of creativity on display as evidence of Qatar’s considerable raw talent.

The event also serves as a platform for independent creators and small businesses aiming to reach wider audiences and establish themselves commercially. Organizers selected approximately 27 participants out of more than 100 applicants for the latest edition, underscoring a growing demand for exhibition and sales opportunities. Despite space limitations, Geekdom operates as a year-round programme, providing ongoing support for entrepreneurs and creators.

Al-Musallam explained that Geekdom collaborates with organizations such as Scale7, Qatar Development Bank’s creative business incubator, and Media City Qatar to offer guidance on essential business skills, including planning, pricing, monetization, and inventory management. This support aims to help creators transition from occasional sellers driven by passion to operators of sustainable enterprises who understand financial realities.

Reflecting on Geekdom’s evolution since its founding in 2013, al-Musallam described the initiative as a personal project that has exceeded his expectations. He encouraged young people to embrace their interests openly and confidently, stating, "Celebrate your passion. Be unapologetically geeky."

Looking ahead, Geekdom faces the challenge of accommodating its expanding community while preserving the welcoming, inclusive spirit that has defined its growth. For al-Musallam, the true measure of success lies not just in attendance numbers but in participants’ increased confidence to showcase their work, build networks, and pursue entrepreneurial opportunities within Qatar’s creative ecosystem.
