Access to gym facilities is increasingly influencing housing decisions among members of Generation Z, according to a recent survey by The Gym Group conducted in partnership with OnePoll. The poll found that nearly three-quarters (72 percent) of respondents aged 18 to 24 consider proximity to a gym or fitness centre an important factor when choosing where to live. In London, this figure was even higher, with 82 percent citing gym access as a key consideration.

The survey, which gathered responses from 2,000 adults aged 16 to 29 across the UK, also revealed that 32 percent of those polled are willing to pay more in rent to live closer to a gym. On average, these respondents indicated they would pay around £40 extra per month, equating to approximately £480 additional rent annually.

Members of Generation Z, typically defined as those born between the late 1990s and early 2010s, are noted for placing significant emphasis on their physical and mental health. Reflecting this trend, 58 percent of participants reported exercising at least twice weekly, while 54 percent said they attend a gym at least once a week. Additionally, the survey highlighted a growing prioritization of health and fitness expenditures among young adults. Some 42 percent of respondents stated they preferred to allocate their disposable income towards gym memberships and fitness-related activities ahead of other spending categories such as dining out, travel, or streaming services—a notable increase from 26 percent in the previous year.

Will Orr, chief executive of The Gym Group, commented that the findings illustrate a shift in how young adults integrate fitness into their everyday lives. He noted that gym attendance is becoming more than just a means of exercising; it now plays a significant role in lifestyle and housing choices.

The survey’s results suggest that for many young adults, convenience to fitness amenities is becoming an essential component in residential selection, indicating broader changes in consumer priorities within the housing market.
