Chesham United is mourning the sudden passing of Roger Payne, the club’s majority shareholder, at the age of 78. Payne, who held 49 percent of the shares in the National League South side, died unexpectedly on Sunday.

Payne had been a prominent figure in Buckinghamshire football for many years. Before his involvement with Chesham United, he served as a director at Aylesbury United. In April 2012, he stepped in to provide vital financial support that helped stabilize Chesham United during a critical period.

During his 14-year tenure at the club’s Meadow ground, Payne played a significant role in the team’s progress, overseeing multiple promotions and important milestones. He notably appointed the current management duo, James Duncan and Michael Murray, who have been integral to the club’s recent efforts on and off the pitch.

Chesham United released a statement expressing deep sorrow at Payne’s death: “It is with unimaginable sadness that we announce that majority shareholder of Chesham United, Roger Payne, unexpectedly passed away today. We are all still in shock and will make further updates as and when appropriate. Our thoughts are with Roger’s wife and his family at this moment in time.”

The club and its supporters are now facing the challenge of moving forward without Payne’s leadership and backing, reflecting on the lasting impact he had on the community and football in the region.
