Researchers in Sweden have identified a genetic connection between inherited Neanderthal DNA and increased muscle mass in modern humans. According to the study, individuals carrying this specific genetic trait exhibit, on average, 271 grams more muscle compared to those without it.

The investigation focused on a growth hormone receptor gene variant linked to Neanderthal ancestry, suggesting that this ancient genetic contribution may have a subtle but measurable impact on physical build. Despite the association, scientists emphasize that the presence of this gene does not replace the need for regular physical exercise.

Miriam Berreiter, one of the researchers involved, noted that while the Neanderthal-derived growth hormone receptor variant may influence muscle development, it remains important for carriers to maintain training routines to achieve significant strength gains. The study underscores the nuanced role of evolutionary genetics in current human physiology but reinforces conventional wisdom regarding physical fitness and muscle building.
