Georgia claimed the No. 1 spot in the latest Associated Press college football top 25 ranking released Sunday after securing a 20-17 victory over Alabama on the road. This marks Georgia’s first win at Alabama’s Tuscaloosa stadium since 2014 and returned the Bulldogs to the top position for the first time since September 2024. Georgia, which had held the No. 2 ranking for five consecutive polls, received 66 of the 70 first-place votes from a panel of media members. The game featured a controversial moment involving a missed pass interference call that appeared to assist Georgia’s winning drive.
This season has already seen an unusual level of turnover atop the polls, with three teams—Georgia, Texas, and Alabama—sharing the No. 1 ranking during the first six weeks, a pattern last witnessed in 1990. Texas, which lost to rival Oklahoma, fell six positions to No. 7. Alabama dropped to No. 6 but remained within the top 10 alongside BYU, Mississippi, and Texas Tech.
Notre Dame advanced one spot to No. 2 after a dominant 58-7 victory over Stanford in preparation for an upcoming top-10 matchup against BYU. The Fighting Irish received one first-place vote and reached their highest ranking since the end of the 2024 season. Miami secured the No. 3 ranking with two first-place votes, followed by Ohio State at No. 4 and Indiana at No. 5. Indiana earned one first-place vote and rose two places after a narrow win against Nebraska.
Several other teams experienced significant movement in the rankings. Oregon, which began the season with its highest preseason ranking ever at No. 2, was dropped from the poll for the first time in four years following its second loss in a month—a 17-15 home defeat to UCLA. That loss brought Oregon’s record to 3-2 and echoed a previous drop from the rankings after a heavy loss to Georgia in the 2022 opener.
UCLA surged nine spots to No. 12, while Kentucky climbed from unranked to No. 15 after a 35-34 overtime win against LSU, contributing to LSU’s fall from No. 10 to No. 22. Kentucky’s ranking is its highest since early October 2022. Wake Forest and Northwestern made their debuts in the rankings at No. 21 and No. 25, respectively, with Northwestern securing its first ranking under fourth-year head coach David Braun.
Florida, meanwhile, continued a rapid decline, falling out of the rankings after dropping from No. 8 to No. 16 in just two weeks following a 38-19 loss at home against South Carolina. Pittsburgh also returned to unranked status after scoring only one touchdown on eight possessions in the second half of a 21-17 loss to North Carolina.
The rankings reflect ongoing shifts as teams navigate the midseason stretch, with several top programs facing challenges and newcomers rising in prominence.
