Georgia Voll delivered a standout all-round performance to lead the Sydney Thunder to a six-wicket victory over the Melbourne Renegades in the opening match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) season on Thursday. The game, played in Melbourne, saw Voll bounce back emphatically after recent setbacks, including consecutive ducks and a lack of involvement with the ball during Australia’s recent T20 series against New Zealand.
The Renegades, batting first, stumbled to 9-138 following a dramatic middle-order collapse. Voll’s bowling was instrumental in dismantling the opposition’s lineup, as she took four wickets for 26 runs, disrupting the Renegades’ momentum after they reached 1-76 early in their innings. The collapse accelerated after Hayley Matthews’ dismissal for 45 off the first ball of the 11th over, triggering a rapid loss of wickets that prevented the Renegades from setting a more challenging target.
Despite the innings ending on a low note, the Renegades had moments of promise. Anika Learoyd contributed her highest ever WBBL score with 48 runs off 37 balls, forming a crucial 62-run partnership with Heather Knight, who remained unbeaten on 29. The return of Tayla Vlaeminck, marking her first WBBL appearance in five years after injury, was a notable positive for the Renegades. Vlaeminck’s pace troubled the Thunder’s batters late in the game, claiming the wickets of Learoyd and Laura Harris, the latter falling for a duck. However, her impact came too late to alter the outcome.
The Thunder’s chase began strongly, with Voll providing a quick start by scoring 25 runs off 18 balls, including a six struck off the second ball she faced. Despite missing a key batter in Phoebe Litchfield, the Thunder maintained control throughout the innings. The team capitalised on their strong start and the contributions of Anika Learoyd and Heather Knight, eventually reaching the target with 18 balls remaining.
Sydney also welcomed back Hannah Darlington, whose seam bowling added further pressure by claiming two wickets. Voll’s all-round display, combining effective bowling with a brisk start at the top of the order, set the tone for the Thunder’s success. The victory highlights the depth and versatility within the Thunder squad, raising expectations for the season ahead.
