Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton led the Bulldogs to a 20-17 victory over Alabama on October 11 in Tuscaloosa, propelling Georgia to the top spot in the US LBM Coaches Poll. Stockton, who grew up approximately 75 miles from Georgia’s campus, completed 18 of 22 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown, while also scoring on a 14-yard run in the third quarter. His performance included a notable play where he connected with receiver Craig Dandridge Jr. on a 30-yard catch despite the defender falling backward.

Georgia’s win came despite an intense challenge from Alabama and a questionable missed pass interference call against the Tide inside Georgia’s 5-yard line late in the game. Facing third-and-10 from their own 34-yard line, Georgia’s defense, under coordinator Glenn Schumann’s direction, executed a critical sack on Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell. The defensive pressure prevented Alabama from extending their drive and ultimately forced a punt that gave Georgia control for the remainder of the game.

Head coach Kirby Smart praised Stockton’s competitive nature but acknowledged that he remains restless during games. “I’m not calm, ever, with any quarterback,” Smart said, noting a shift in his motivations focused on family and character rather than solely wins and losses. With this victory, Georgia improved to 6-0 on the season and looks ahead to hosting Auburn on October 17 before an open date.

Defensive back Khalil Barnes, a transfer from Clemson, described Stockton as a “cold-blooded killer” who remains unfazed by high-pressure moments. “He don’t need hype,” Barnes said. “We trust him, we love him enough so the media don’t got to.”

Despite outgaining Alabama 455 yards to 346, Georgia’s triumph required resilience and a timely defensive stand in the closing stages. The Bulldogs showcased a balanced effort reminiscent of Smart’s previous squads that won consecutive national championships in 2021 and 2022.

After the game, Stockton reflected on his approach to sportsmanship and composure. He acknowledged efforts to improve his pregame interactions with opposing quarterbacks and described his mindset as striving to remain “calm in the chaos.” As college football continues to experience widespread changes due to the name, image, and likeness era and shifting talent distribution, Georgia has maintained its status as a dominant force, standing alone atop the rankings with Stockton orchestrating the offense.
