German drone manufacturer Quantum Systems announced on Thursday that it has secured $1.2 billion in a funding round, more than doubling its valuation to $8 billion. The significant investment underscores growing investor interest in defense technology amid increased rearmament efforts across Europe.
Based in Munich, Quantum Systems specializes in surveillance drones and AI-driven autonomous systems. The company, founded in 2015, supplies reconnaissance drones to the Ukrainian armed forces engaged in the ongoing conflict with Russia, as well as to the German military and other European defense organizations. Its product line has expanded beyond aerial drones to include autonomous land and sea systems.
The latest fundraising round attracted high-profile investors, including U.S. private equity firm Blackstone, aerospace giant Airbus, and investment firms Noteus and Advent. Quantum Systems’ co-CEO Sven Kruck said the capital infusion would enable the company to scale production, expand its global footprint, and advance the development of next-generation AI-powered autonomous platforms. He also noted the funds would accelerate enhancement of the company’s software platforms that integrate its autonomous systems.
Quantum Systems reported revenues of approximately €300 million in the previous year. The company’s co-CEO and co-founder Florian Seibel indicated that the new funding might facilitate the acquisition of Stark Defence, a startup founded in 2024 that specializes in attack drones and recently raised €500 million in its own funding round. Seibel also co-founded Stark Defence.
However, Stark Defence issued a statement denying plans to merge with Quantum Systems, emphasizing the importance of maintaining an independent European defense industry. “A strong European defence ecosystem depends on independent companies that compete, innovate and collaborate where it makes sense,” the company said. “That ultimately delivers better capabilities to the armed forces.”
The developments come as European nations intensify investments in defense technology amidst geopolitical uncertainties, reflecting broader trends of increased capital flow into military innovation.
