Jurgen Klopp is reportedly positioned to return to football management following the German Football Association’s (DFB) confirmation that he has expressed a willingness to replace Julian Nagelsmann as head coach of the Germany national team.

Nagelsmann resigned after Germany's early exit from the World Cup in North America, where the four-time champions were eliminated in the round of 32 following a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay on Monday. The defeat marked a disappointing end to Germany’s campaign and intensified calls for change despite Nagelsmann’s earlier reluctance to step down.

The DFB officially announced Nagelsmann’s departure on Wednesday and indicated that they plan to enter discussions with Klopp, who most recently managed Liverpool before stepping down in 2024. According to the association, Klopp has already signaled his general openness to taking on the role. In a statement, the DFB said, “Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp. He has already signalled his general willingness to take on the position.”

Nagelsmann addressed his decision in a public statement, acknowledging the difficulty of stepping down and emphasizing his dedication to the team’s success. “This decision has not been an easy one for me at all. My primary objective has always been the success of the team. After such a painful disappointment, the team deserves the opportunity for a true new start,” he said. He also thanked the fans for their support throughout the tournament, stating, “You carried us along, you believed in us. You deserved far more.”

Klopp is currently in the United States working as a pundit for MagentaTV. When asked about the possibility of returning to management with Germany, he said, “I haven’t thought about that yet. I understand that my name is being mentioned now, but it’s not the time to talk about that.”

At this stage, no agreement has been reached, and the DFB’s upcoming discussions with Klopp will be closely watched as the association seeks to reinvigorate the national team following a disappointing World Cup showing.
