Germany has reiterated its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Kuwait, particularly in areas of security, investment, technology, and education, during a reception held to mark the 36th anniversary of German reunification. The event, organized by the German Embassy in Kuwait, brought together diplomats, officials, and members of the German community in the country.

Ambassador-designate Dr. Dirk Rotenberg emphasized the enduring friendship between Germany and Kuwait, which was formally established in 1964. He noted that while the relationship is strong, both nations are actively seeking to deepen cooperation. Highlighting ongoing strategic dialogue, Rotenberg referenced a recent visit to Berlin by Kuwait’s foreign minister for discussions with German counterpart Johann Wadephul. The talks aimed to enhance collaboration in economic and investment sectors, with a focus on energy, technology, infrastructure, connectivity, and artificial intelligence. Defense, education, and academic exchanges were also key components of the dialogue.

Rotenberg further spoke about efforts to broaden cooperation between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council, reflecting a shared interest in regional stability and development. Against the backdrop of ongoing conflicts and security challenges in Europe and the Middle East, he underscored the critical need for international partnerships. Quoting German foreign minister Wadephul’s remarks at the United Nations General Assembly, Rotenberg highlighted Germany’s commitment to peace and security amid a global increase in violent conflicts and constrained state resources.

Addressing recent security incidents in the Gulf region, Rotenberg expressed Germany’s solidarity with Kuwait following attacks targeting the country and other Gulf states. Drawing a parallel with Germany’s response to the 1990 invasion of Kuwait, he reaffirmed Germany’s full support for Kuwait’s leadership and people in confronting these acts of aggression. He also praised Kuwait’s military and security forces for their efforts in safeguarding residents, including Germans living in the country, saying the community felt well protected.

Reflecting on the historical significance of German Unity Day, which commemorates the country’s reunification on October 3, 1990, after decades of division during the Cold War, Rotenberg reflected on the importance of peaceful resolution. He contrasted the peaceful revolution that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall with the resurgence of conflict and force in Europe today, noting the widespread crises affecting multiple regions.

In closing, the ambassador-designate reaffirmed the embassy’s commitment to supporting the German community in Kuwait and stressed their ongoing role in fostering the longstanding partnership between the two nations.
