Matthew Mott has emerged as the leading candidate to become the Sydney Sixers’ next men’s Big Bash League (BBL) coach, marking the team’s third coaching appointment in less than six months. The 52-year-old coach may also take on the role of coaching the Sixers’ women’s team, creating a rare scenario where a single coach manages both squads in different competitions.

The Sixers have been seeking a permanent replacement since James Hopes resigned after only two months to accept a dual coaching position with the Queensland Bulls and Brisbane Heat. Mott, who has a distinguished coaching resume including leading Australia to multiple women’s World Cup victories and guiding England’s men to the 2022 T20 World Cup title, had previously served as an assistant coach under Greg Shipperd with the Sixers men’s team and was the head coach of the women’s Sixers during the last season.

Sources familiar with the situation indicate that Mott is a strong contender to succeed Hopes and could potentially oversee both the men’s and women’s teams. Although the schedules of the two competitions do not overlap, it remains uncertain whether this dual role aligns with the preferences of the Sixers’ management.

Initially, former Australian all-rounder Dan Christian was considered a front-runner to assume the men’s head coaching position. However, his prospects have reportedly diminished as Mott’s candidacy gained traction. Another name linked to the vacancy was Peter Moores, a former England coach who had recently been involved with the Melbourne Stars before a restructuring at Cricket Victoria. Despite speculation, Moores is expected to remain with the Stars as an assistant under incoming coach Cameron White, who is leaving the Melbourne Renegades.

The Sixers’ search reflects ongoing coaching transitions within the BBL and the evolving strategies of teams to leverage experienced leadership. A formal announcement regarding the appointments is anticipated in the coming weeks as the Sixers prepare for the next season.
