Amir Ghafour, a prominent figure in Iran’s volleyball scene, has been recalled to the national team ahead of the 2024 Volleyball Nations League (VNL). The 32-year-old opposite, standing 2.02 meters tall, had previously stepped away from the team last year but was reinstated by head coach Mauricio Motta Paes.

Ghafour has been a significant contributor to Iran’s volleyball achievements over the past decade. Since making his debut with the senior national team in 2011, he played an integral role in Iran’s rise on the international stage. Notably, Ghafour helped secure Iran’s first-ever qualification for the Olympic Games, participating in the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics. During Rio, the team achieved a historic fifth-place finish, while in Tokyo, they ended in ninth place.

His early career with Team Melli saw him quickly establish himself as a reliable offensive weapon. Ghafour debuted as a fixed player during the 2012 Summer Olympics qualification campaign under then-coach Julio Velasco. He was also a key member of the squad that captured Iran’s first Asian Championship gold medals in 2011 and again in 2013. His individual performance was recognized when he received the Best Spiker award at the 2013 Asian Championship.

The recent call-up signals Iran’s intent to leverage Ghafour’s experience and skills in their pursuit of qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. As the Volleyball Nations League approaches, the national team aims to build on its established core of players to contend on the global stage once again.
