Genetic research has uncovered evidence that modern humans carry DNA from two previously unidentified ancient hominin populations, often referred to as "ghost ancestors." These extinct lineages contributed genetic material to the ancestors of present-day humans before their migration out of Africa roughly 50,000 years ago.

According to findings published in the journal Science, one of these archaic human groups lived in Africa approximately 800,000 years ago, while the other coexisted with Homo erectus in Eurasia around 1.8 million years ago. Scientists identified traces of their genetic legacy in the genomes of modern humans through advanced DNA analysis techniques that detect subtle signals of ancient admixture.

Dr. Arjun Biddanda of Johns Hopkins University described the discovery as significant, highlighting that it reveals crossbreeding events with human lineages that lived over a million years ago. The research implies that modern human ancestry is more complex than previously understood, involving interbreeding with multiple now-extinct hominin populations beyond the well-known Neanderthals and Denisovans.

The presence of genetic contributions from these “ghost” populations suggests a protracted history of gene flow among early hominins across Africa and Eurasia. This challenges simpler models of human evolution that envisioned a clean replacement of archaic groups by anatomically modern humans during the "Out of Africa" migration.

Further analysis and additional data are required to clarify the geographic distribution, population size, and specific evolutionary relationships of these ancient hominins. Nonetheless, the study adds to growing evidence that the human family tree contains branches extending deeper and more broadly into prehistory than previously documented.
