Giancarlo Stanton’s availability for the New York Yankees in the first round of the postseason remained uncertain after a live batting practice session conducted on the eve of their wild-card series opener against the Boston Red Sox. The workout, held on Monday at an empty Yankee Stadium, was viewed as a critical opportunity for the slugger to demonstrate both his health and readiness at the plate.

Stanton, who has battled injuries during the regular season, took five swings against a mix of pitchers including Ryan Weathers, Elmer Rodríguez, and prospect Kyle Carr. While he appeared to move without obvious discomfort—running curves in the outfield and taking cautious leads off first base before advancing to second—his performance at the plate was mixed. Over the course of his at-bats, he recorded one walk, fouled off multiple pitches during a lengthy nine-pitch sequence but struck out twice, and hit two grounders that failed to generate significant offensive impact.

Manager Aaron Boone described the day’s workout as “important” but stressed that no final decisions had yet been made regarding Stanton’s status on the playoff roster. Boone indicated he intended to evaluate Stanton again before announcing the official lineup for Tuesday’s game.

“I want to see another day here [from Stanton],” Boone said prior to the batting session. “Again, I don’t know if there’s one definitive moment where you say, ‘There he is, he’s on.’ It’s more just letting the day unfold, seeing where we’re at, and making a final call one way or the other.”

The mixed results from Stanton’s limited swings did not provide a clear answer on his playoff readiness. While the possibility of a strong showing—either through a series of productive at-bats or notable home runs—could have simplified the decision, the Yankees appeared poised to carefully consider their options. The final roster decision was expected to be made on Tuesday morning, hours before the opening game of the postseason series against Boston.
