The New York Giants have acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in a trade that sent a 2027 fifth-round draft pick to Minnesota. The move comes shortly after starting quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury, prompting the Giants to seek additional depth behind veteran backup Jameis Winston.
McCarthy, who was selected 10th overall by the Vikings in the 2024 NFL Draft, had yet to establish consistency during his time in Minnesota. After missing his entire rookie season due to a meniscus tear in the preseason opener, McCarthy started the 2025 season strong with a comeback win against the Chicago Bears. However, his tenure was marred by injuries including an ankle sprain, concussion, and a hairline fracture in his throwing hand. Over ten starts last season, the Vikings posted a 6-4 record with McCarthy at the helm, but his individual performance was underwhelming. He completed just 57.6% of his passes for 163.2 yards per game, throwing 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions, and ranked last among qualifying quarterbacks in completion percentage, interception rate, and passer rating.
The Vikings moved on from McCarthy by signing Kyler Murray, who won the starting role during training camp, which relegated McCarthy to third-string behind Carson Wentz. This development paved the way for the Giants to pursue McCarthy despite concerns about his previous performance and ability to handle the pressures of the New York market. The Giants’ coaching staff, led by John Harbaugh, reportedly valued McCarthy’s talent and potential, partially influenced by a strong recommendation from Jim Harbaugh, who coached McCarthy during the 2023 national championship at Michigan.
“We determined he wasn’t worthy of the No. 6 pick,” John Harbaugh said, referring to the 2024 draft when the Giants instead selected wide receiver Malik Nabers. “He’s a talented guy. There’s just no doubt about it. He was a top-10 pick for a reason. There’s plenty of good tape out there.”
With Dart sidelined and Winston displaying uneven performances, including a recent victory over the Tennessee Titans in difficult conditions, the Giants viewed the McCarthy trade as an aggressive measure to strengthen their quarterback options. Winston remains the starting quarterback for the upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals; however, the long-term outlook is uncertain.
The decision to trade a mid-round draft pick for McCarthy drew questions, especially when alternative backup quarterback options such as free agents and practice squad players were available at no cost beyond salary considerations. The Giants’ front office appears to have concluded that McCarthy offers the best chance to stabilize the position despite his struggles in Minnesota.
The trade also impacts the Giants’ future draft capital. Following this deal, the team holds only five picks in 2027, with missing fourth-, fifth-, and seventh-round selections due to previous trades. The organization hopes McCarthy’s development will enable them to potentially recoup draft assets or solidify their quarterback depth chart.
Meanwhile, the Giants are managing additional adversity after star outside linebacker Brian Burns suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, further complicating their season outlook. With a 2-1 start and a challenging schedule ahead, head coach John Harbaugh emphasized a focus on the immediate future, stating, “Our design is to win the next game. Our design is to be 1-0 next week.”
The acquisition of McCarthy represents a notable gamble by the Giants in a bid to offset the loss of their starting quarterback and maintain competitiveness through the season.
