Tom Green has committed his future to the Greater Western Sydney Giants by signing a two-year contract extension, turning down an opportunity to join the Tasmania Devils as their marquee signing ahead of the club’s inaugural AFL season in 2028. The 25-year-old midfielder’s new deal keeps him at the Giants until at least 2029, reaffirming his status as one of the club’s top earners.
Green, who has played 115 games since debuting in 2020, is widely regarded as one of the league’s most physical midfielders. His ability to win contested ball made him a prime target for the Devils, who have been actively pursuing leading players to build a competitive squad from scratch. The expansion club had hoped to secure Green as a cornerstone player and potential on-field leader.
Despite being out for the entire 2026 season due to an ACL injury, Green’s value to the Giants remains strong. Initially, Greater Western Sydney sought to lock him in with a reported seven-year, multimillion-dollar offer extending through to 2034. However, they ultimately secured his commitment with a shorter two-year extension, providing flexibility while maintaining control of his services through unrestricted free agency.
The Giants were confident that Green preferred to stay in Sydney, where he has felt settled, though they recognized Tasmania’s advances would present a significant challenge. By retaining Green, Greater Western Sydney gains a key component for their leadership group heading into upcoming seasons. With club captain Toby Greene set to depart, Green is widely viewed as a leading candidate to assume the captaincy, potentially sharing the role with defender Connor Idun, one of the vice-captains in 2026.
Following this contract renewal, the Giants are expected to focus on securing another high-profile free agent, defender Lachie Ash. Ash, who earned All-Australian honours, is also reported to be a target of Tasmania’s recruitment efforts. The club’s ability to hold onto these key players will be integral as they prepare for the challenges of future seasons and the growth of their leadership and playing group.
