Gio Reyna is seeking a fresh start with Strasbourg after a turbulent few years marked by limited playing time and multiple transfers. The American winger, who is currently with the U.S. men’s national team (USMNT) at a training camp near Atlanta, has begun the 2026-2027 season strongly with the French club, starting in four of their first five Ligue 1 matches.
Reyna, who began his club career as a regular starter in his teenage years, has since played for Borussia Dortmund, Nottingham Forest, and Borussia Mönchengladbach, struggling to establish a consistent role. Reflecting on his move to Strasbourg, Reyna said Monday that the biggest priority for a player is to be on the field regularly, something he found lacking in recent seasons due to injuries and other factors. After discussions with Strasbourg’s coach Hugo Oliveira and the club’s management, Reyna felt the environment aligned well with his goals and style.
Strasbourg, currently eighth in the Ligue 1 standings at the international break, is owned by Clearlake Capital, a private equity firm that recently acquired the club from former stakeholders Todd Boehly and Mark Walter. Clearlake also owns Chelsea, a dynamic that positions Strasbourg as a key hub for developing young talent. The team’s average age is notably low, with the oldest player just 24 years old, and Reyna, signed for a reported $3.4 million transfer fee from Mönchengladbach following the World Cup, has been encouraged to embrace a leadership role within the squad.
“I was asked to be a leader, to bring experience, and help guide the team,” Reyna said. “I’m really enjoying my time here so far.” His return to regular club minutes is widely seen as positive for his ongoing USMNT involvement.
Meanwhile, the national team will honor defender Tim Ream ahead of their match against Chile next week in St. Louis, Ream’s hometown. Although the ceremony is not officially a retirement event, the 38-year-old defender’s appearance in the recent World Cup Round of 16 loss to Belgium was likely his final outing for the national team. Captaining the USMNT during the tournament, Ream’s future selections appear doubtful, especially under coach Mauricio Pochettino’s apparent preference for younger players in this training camp lineup.
Out of the 28 players called to camp, 16 were present for Monday’s training session, with absentees representing players who appeared for their clubs the previous day. The camp will continue over the next two weeks ahead of multiple upcoming international fixtures.
