Former New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi voiced support for current manager Aaron Boone following the team's recent elimination from the American League Division Series (ALDS). Girardi, who led the Yankees to their last World Series championship in 2009, spoke favorably of Boone’s performance during a recent appearance on “The Show with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman.”

The Yankees were swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in last week’s playoff series, renewing calls among some fans and commentators for Boone’s dismissal. A recent poll indicated that a significant portion of the fanbase, more than 10,000 out of 12,507 respondents, favored firing Boone. Despite this, indications suggest Boone will remain at the helm for the upcoming season.

Girardi argued that Boone’s management during the 2026 campaign deserved credit rather than criticism. He highlighted Boone’s ability to adapt the team’s approach, pointing out a shift from relying on offensive power to a strategy focused more on pitching and bullpen management. Girardi remarked that Boone effectively maximized the team’s resources under challenging circumstances, managing the pitching staff “extremely well” and extracting strong performances from the bullpen.

When discussing the Yankees’ offensive struggles throughout the season, Girardi was reluctant to place responsibility solely on Boone. He suggested that the lineup’s underperformance stemmed from players not living up to projections rather than coaching deficiencies. “I just don’t think the guys had the years that they projected them to have, or some of the guys just aren’t as good as they thought they would be,” Girardi said.

Boone has been the Yankees’ manager for nine seasons. Under his leadership, the team reached the World Series once, in 2022, but has faced criticism in recent years for falling short of expectations. As the Yankees prepare for the next season, the debate over Boone’s future remains a topic of discussion among fans and the media, though notable voices like Girardi continue to express confidence in his managerial capabilities.
